How it works
min/km = min/mile × (1000 ÷ 1609.344); speed = distance ÷ time
A pace is just time per unit distance, and a speed is distance per unit time — they are inverses of the same motion. Because one mile is exactly 1609.344 metres, a per-mile pace converts to a per-kilometre pace by multiplying by 1000 ÷ 1609.344 ≈ 0.621371 (and back by dividing). Speed is the same relationship the other way up: divide the distance by the time and read it as mph or km/h. We compute everything internally in metres and seconds and only convert at the edge, so the four figures never drift apart by rounding. The table below is a quick reference for common per-mile paces — the tool itself accepts any pace or speed and is exact. | Pace (min/mi) | Pace (min/km) | Speed (mph) | Speed (km/h) | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | 6:00 | 3:44 | 10.00 | 16.09 | | 7:00 | 4:21 | 8.57 | 13.79 | | 8:00 | 4:58 | 7.50 | 12.07 | | 9:00 | 5:36 | 6.67 | 10.73 | | 10:00 | 6:13 | 6.00 | 9.66 | | 11:00 | 6:50 | 5.45 | 8.78 | | 12:00 | 7:27 | 5.00 | 8.05 |

FAQ
How do I convert min/mile to min/km?
Multiply your min/mile pace by 1000 ÷ 1609.344 ≈ 0.6214. For example, 8:00 per mile is 480 seconds; 480 × 0.6214 ≈ 298 seconds, or about 4:58 per kilometre. The calculator does both directions for you.
How do I convert min/km to min/mile?
Divide your min/km pace by 0.6214 (equivalently, multiply by 1609.344 ÷ 1000 ≈ 1.6093). A 5:00 per kilometre pace is 300 seconds; 300 ÷ 0.6214 ≈ 483 seconds, or about 8:03 per mile.
How do I turn pace into speed (mph or km/h)?
Speed is distance over time. For mph, divide 60 by your min/mile pace (60 ÷ 8:00 = 7.5 mph). For km/h, divide 60 by your min/km pace (60 ÷ 5:00 = 12 km/h). The tool shows both speeds for whatever pace you enter.
What is 8:00 per mile in min/km?
Roughly 4:58 per kilometre, which is the same as 7.5 mph or about 12.07 km/h. All four describe one identical effort.
Why is the min/mile number always larger than min/km?
A mile is longer than a kilometre (1.609 km), so it takes more time to cover. For the same effort the per-mile figure is always the bigger number, even though the speed is identical.
Is the mile exactly 1.609 km?
The international mile is exactly 1609.344 metres, i.e. 1.609344 km, fixed by the 1959 yard-and-pound agreement. This calculator uses the exact value, so conversions never accumulate rounding error.
